Having done many VW conversions, the main problem is the rebuilders. They
don't replace worn gears or bearings unless necessary. Even then, the VW is
designed to make a lot of noise from the factory due to the design of the
gears. I have tried just about everything on my 70 classic. Suggestion,
remove the shift rod from the tranny connection and take out the shift lever
completely. The noise comes from the tranny to the gearshift. A VW should
only use 2nd gear from 0 to 85mph with no need for any other gear. I use the
AC-31 with Curtis 1238 controller.
