I bought my Prius through the dealership last fall, and it wasn't too
unpleasant. I had decided before I even walked in that I wanted that exact
car, and I saw it sitting in their lot so I knew it was available, and it
was only an issue of how easy they would make it for me -- this particular
dealer made it pretty easy (walked out with the car keys 2 hours later). I
think I happened to get a salesperson who I got along with, just by chance.

That being said, the idea of shopping for a car at dealers is pretty
creepy. When I have to buy parts at a dealer, because they aren't sold at
any other places, they always try to sell me something (as in, a new car
rather than selling me a part for a 25 year old one).... and then when you
get down to it, they don't know any of the technical answers I want (the
problem of selling to an engineer :). Even the dealer where I got the
prius has tried to sell me extra stuff when I went in there later to clear
up some stuff on the paperwork, and for maintenance. (I have the
maintenance done there because they include the first 3 years free -- after
that, I'll probably go to the independent local import shop instead).

The only other time I've gone to a dealer to actually consider buying a car
was to ask them if they were going to carry any diesel models from EU, and
they realized that they had nothing to sell me, and I realized they had
little interest in meeting my needs.
