A beach buggy-like cruiser, seen here, is one of the body options offered in
the highly customizable Camatte57s.

Feeling racier? This open-top sports model has more of a mini-GT look to it.

It might look fast, but the Camatte57s won't break any speed limits.
Peformance from the electric motor is kid-friendly (i.e. slow enough to
please parents).

And you thought piecing together that model train set was intimidating?
There are 57 small and lightweight body panels that make up the exterior of
the Camatte57s. Toyota says mixing and matching them is simple and easy to
do. We'll have to take their word for it.

Toyota Camatte 57s concept
ToyotaUKTV Jun 10, 2013
The Toyota Camatte 57s concept, a car you can build yourself, has been
unveiled at the Tokyo Toy Show.

Toyota is displaying an electric-powered and open-topped concept at the
Tokyo Toy Show. Called the Camatte57s, the shape of the vehicle is highly
customizable thanks to the 57 small and lightweight detachable panels that
make up the exterior. There is room for three onboard, and the seats and
pedals can be adjusted so kids can drive. Don’t worry, a parent seated in
the right rear seat “assists” with the steering and brakes.

Toyota wants to bring families closer together by having them build cars.
No, the Japanese automaker isn’t going to hand your kids welding equipment
anytime soon. But it does want both young and old to enjoy the pleasures of
piecing together its Camatte57s toy car, which will be on display June 13-16
at the Tokyo Toy Show.

Stretching 118 inches in length, the tiny Camatte57s is nearly three feet
shorter than the Toyota Yaris 3-door hatchback. The seats are in a
triangular configuration and there’s room for three onboard. The driver’s
seat can be adjusted to accommodate children.

For any nervous parents out there, don’t fret too much. There are controls
for the steering and brakes located at the right rear passenger seat -
junior isn't going to be let loose on the open-road quite yet.

The coolest feature about the Camatte57s is the Lego-like build of the
body-panels. There are 57 separate small panels that are lightweight and
simple to mix and match. Build options include a beach buggy-like cruiser,
or an open-topped sports car.

Performance won’t quite match the racy looks – expect a top speed that
barely breaks into double-digits.

An employee (right) of Japanese automaker Toyota explains to a member of the
media about the new car kit for children "Camatte57s," which is driven by
electricity and composed of 57 detachable body panels, at the International
Toy Show in Tokyo yesterday. Toyota, which introduced the electric car kit
aimed at children aged 10 years and older, said that the new cars can be
driven by children but have not been through safety tests, and that there
are no plans to put them on sale yet. The four-day event will open to public
tomorrow.

Video: Toyota's electric car kit for kids euronews Videos [2013/06/13]
Cars for kids is the latest idea from Toyota. Thinking of how to create
future drivers in the face of falling sales in Japan, the world’s biggest
carmaker unveiled its latest concept at the Tokyo International Toy Show.
The electric car kit is aimed at children aged 10 years and up, with two
seats in the back to ferry parents around. It is called a ‘Camatte’ which in
Japanese means “Get me involved” or “Care for me”. The head of the
development team Tsuji Kenji explained: “We have to figure out how to
involve children with cars and make them fans of cars in this mature ales
market by making interaction with the car fun. Cars are all about fun and we
want to put this out there and see where it goes.” As well as a customisable
body with interchangeable panels, the car has an emergency brake located in
the back which can be operated by a parent passenger. They can also limit
the vehicle’s speed, setting it at five,10, 20 or 30 kilometres per hour.
The top speed is 40 kph. Toyota has no plans to put them on sale at this
time, and said they are not intended for use on public roads. Car sales have
been on a downward trend in Japan and domestic passenger car sales are
forecast to drop by about 13 percent in 2013, according to the Japan
Automobile Manufacturer’s Association.
