The city may give an aging Zamboni a new lease on life by converting it to electric power. The city operates a fleet of Zambonis to clean ice at its recreational facilities. One of the propane-powered ice-cleaning machines is nearing the end of its operating life, and city staff members say converting it to electric power could be a money saver for the local government over the next few years. According to a report coming before council on Monday, the unit has about five years left of operating life, after which it would be retired. But converting the machine to electric power would extend its life by another five years to 2023. The report notes that doing so would come at a cost - $32,263. However, city staff say the savings incurred from the switch would be $59,588, meaning the conversion would actually lead to a net benefit of $27,326. If the machine does not need a battery replacement over the 10 years, the savings could add up to over $40,000. "Repair and maintenance costs for electric machines are significantly less mostly because there are no engine replacement or tune up needs," the report says. City staff are recommending the project be completed this year and be financed from equipment reserves. If the project gets the green light, the Zamboni will become the second electric Zamboni the city owns. City council approved the purchase of a new electric model last year for just under $170,000. A new propane model costs about $100,000. The move drew the ire of Coun. Bill McKay, who argued that city staff had not provided a business case for the transition to electric vehicles.
