Nissan may be the current leader in the global electric vehicle market with
the mass-produced, all-electric Leaf, but the Japanese automaker isn’t
resting on its laurels. Nissan Senior Vice President for R&D Carla Bailo has
revealed plans for further EV expansion, telling Automotive News that the
global Nissan EV lineup will eventually grow to five models in total,
including the Leaf.

The first additional Nissan EV model will be an electric version of the
NV200 compact van, which could possibly become available as a zero-emissions
taxi for New York City. The electric van has been tested in Europe by
numerous delivery companies like FedEx and will be produced in Barcelona,
Spain.

Nissan also unveiled the Infiniti LE concept at the 2012 New York auto show
as a more luxurious version of the Nissan Leaf. It was expected to debut by
2014, however, we reported earlier this year that the Infiniti LE has been
delayed, although Infiniti president Johan de Nysschen did confirm that an
Infiniti electric vehicle will happen eventually.

At this point we don’t know anything about the two other Nissan EVs that
would bring the total number to five, but Bailo did say that future Nissan
electric cars will use inductive charging systems which allow the cars to be
charged wirelessly. This technology allows the batteries to be charged if
the car is parked on a special charging mat, without requiring drivers to
plug in a cable. This was previously thought to be a differentiating feature
for Infiniti EVs exclusively, but Bailo told AN that this system would be
used across all brands once the technology is ready.
