Dacia brand has become a "cash cow" for parent Renault

If that happens, even budget brand Dacia will consider offering one, Ghosn said. “When demand is ready for this, we will be there,” Ghosn told Auto Express. “Obviously we are helping with demand by lowering the cost of electric cars and by signing agreements with cities across the world for electric cars,” the CEO added. He predicts the EV market will expand significantly, thus reducing prices of batteries and making an electric Dacia a possibility. “As cities get charging stations more people are going to come, and of course the cost of the cars will come down too. So there is nothing that forbids an electric Dacia car in the future. The day there is demand, of course, we will be able to produce it,” Ghosn said. Renault’s boss sees VW’s new e-Up! and e-Golf and BMW’s new i3 electric vehicles as a good thing for the electric car market, as these new models will contribute to the development of the infrastructure and will raise interest for the segment. “Mark my words, in time they are all going to come to it. You cannot continue to prosper in this industry without electric cars and plug-in hybrids,” said Ghosn, who predicted that by 2020 EVs will make up 10 percent of the market for new cars in Europe.
