BMW has officially gone electric. The 2014 BMW i3 extended range electric
vehicle went into production today in Germany, signaling the start of a new
era for Bimmer.

Manufactured by BMW in Leipzig, BMW has some serious money (and quite a few
jobs) on the line with the i3. BMW invested about $534 million in its
Leipzig facility alone for i3 production, creating about 800 new jobs in the
process, the automaker claims. With the i3 built largely of carbon
fiber-reinforced plastic, BMW has a few other key facilities in Germany, and
even in Moses Lake, Wash., where much of the BMW i3's carbon fiber is
produced.

The $42,275 2014 BMW i3 is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor making
170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque and between 80 and 100 miles of range. For
those whose commute takes them beyond the i3's range, BMW will offer a $3850
650-cc I-2 engine making 34 hp, which will turn the i3 from an electric car,
to a range-extended electric vehicle like the Chevrolet Volt. With the
two-cylinder gas engine, the i3's range is extended an additional 80 miles.

The first batch of BMW i3s will be delivered to customers in Germany and the
rest of Europe beginning in November. The 2014 BMW i3 will launch in the
United States, China, and other global markets in early 2014.
