miles

The results are in from the UK’s Ultra Low Carbon demonstration trial of
electric vehicles: 91 per cent of drivers would recommend electric vehicles,
while 50 per cent intend to replace their current internal combustion engine
with an electric vehicle.

80 per cent of the drivers in the trial see electric vehicles as a viable
option and 72 per cent say that an electric vehicle is sufficient for their
needs. Drivers adapted to new elements such as regenerative breaking within
their first trip and over a third of drivers stated that their electric
vehicle had superior performance to their normal car. They also found
charging to be more straight-forward than they imagined, but a very high
proportion of drivers are convinced that public charging sites are
essential.

The average trip length was 5.1 miles and the average daily mileage was 21.4
miles. According to CENEX, the drivers experienced little range anxiety, as
the vast majority kept comfortably within the capable range of electric
vehicles, with 75 per cent of daily use consuming less than 50 per cent of
battery capacity.

The results from the trial, which involved 349 vehicles, covered over 1.5
million miles and 270,000 journeys, were prepared by CENEX, the UK’s first
Centre of Excellence for Low Carbon and Fuel Cell technologies; and Oxford
Brookes University.

The Ultra-Low Carbon Vehicle (ULCV) demonstrator project was launched in
2008 by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and was funded by the Office for
Low Emissions Vehicles (OLEV) and the TSB. It was the first UK-wide major
trial aimed at exposing electric vehicles to multiple drivers and drive
cycles, monitoring the performance of vehicles in real-world scenarios and
understanding customer perception and concerns around electric vehicles and
charging infrastructure.

The drivers, vehicles and their usage patterns were selected by the
individual consortia taking part in the project, including organisations
such as Nissan, Scottish Power, Birmingham City Councils and the MET Police.

A summary report of the findings from the ULCV demonstrator project can be
found here.

Robert Evans, CEO, Cenex said, “Uptake of electric vehicles has been slower
than some expected with real and perceived barriers including consumer
concern over range anxiety and limited public infrastructure. However this
report proves that EVs are extremely viable in daily life. Government and
industry players are committed to sustained effort to support what is
expected to be a gradual uptake of plug-in vehicles in the market, running
in parallel with the increased use of plug-in capability, as a means of
offering consumers fuel cost savings and improved environmental performance.

“Likewise, vehicle recharging infrastructure is continually growing. The UK
national Plugged-in Places Scheme has already helped install over 5,000
public charge points in key areas including business parks, tourist
attractions and leisure centres with the scheme being extended as well as
being complemented by new national measures.”

In related news, Wyke Farms, the UK’s largest independent cheese producer
and milk processor, which recently become 100 per cent sufficient in
renewable energy, has announced that it is switching to electric vehicles
for its delivery services. The initiative, which is part of Wyke Farm’s 100%
Green sustainability project, will cut the company’s associated fuel costs
by 75 per cent and reduce its CO2 emissions by around 86kg a week.
