Patrick Janisch gets about 95 to 105 miles per charge with his 2013 Ford
Focus electric. Range anxiety is overblown, he says, especially if you take
advantage of the infotainment system. (Patrick Janisch)

Staying connected in the 2013 Ford Focus electric provides Patrick Janisch
creature comforts like being able to program his electric vehicle to heat
the interior before he leaves for work.

Just like every house has its own smell, every car has its own story. In Car
Stories, we want to hear from the people that matter most to the auto
industry: The drivers. This week we hear from Patrick Janisch and his 2013
Ford Focus Electric.

Name: Patrick Janisch

Fuel-efficient car of choice (year/make/model): 2013 Ford Focus Electric.

What do you do? Pharmaceutical scientist, Skokie.

Where do you live? Clarendon Hills.

When did you get it? May 2013.

What did you drive before? 2008 Ford Focus.

What's your mpg? On average, I am able to achieve 215 watt-hours/mile, which
is the energy equivalent to about 120 miles/gallon of gasoline. My range is
often 95 to 105 miles on a single charge. With my daily commute of 50 miles
round trip and the ability to charge at work, I am never worried about
running out of battery.

How many miles/year? 13,000/year.

How has your fuel-efficient car affected your business or lifestyle? We also
own a 2013 Ford Escape which is pretty fuel efficient in itself. But having
the option, we love taking the Focus Electric for the night out or to run
errands. Even though the battery is in the trunk, there is still plenty of
room for groceries or bags of soil. As a family, we used to spend upwards of
$400/month on gasoline and now we are down around $125/month; that savings
in gas pays for the lease payment on the Focus Electric. Since owning the
electric car, my wife and I have looked for other opportunities to "green"
our lives. We replaced our old thermostat with a smart-learning Nest
thermostat and we have switched out our old light bulbs to CFLs.

Any auto myths you can debunk or verify? I think the concept of "range
anxiety" or the fear that the vehicle will have insufficient range to reach
its destination is overblown. As long as you know where you are going and
about how far it is, you should never have to worry about range. A nice
feature on the Focus Electric's navigation screen is it will direct you to
the closest charging station if you did need a quick charge. Another
misconception is the acceleration and horsepower of an electric car.
Everyone expects them to be slow and sluggish off the line, but in reality
they are pretty quick, sometimes quicker than their gas counterparts. Since
I owned a gas-powered Focus prior to my Electric Focus, I can say the
electric one is hands-down quicker.

What more would you want out of a vehicle in a.) a perfect world and b.) the
real world? The range of a Tesla (265 miles) with the price tag of the Focus
Electric ($28,000 after tax credits).

Favorite feature? In this day and age of technology, I love how connected
the Focus Electric is. It has a companion iOS or Android application that
will allow you start the car from anywhere in the world, see the progress of
charging and when it will be complete, a map of available charging stations,
how much money and CO2 you have saved; the list goes on! Another helpful
feature is the temperature scheduler. If you leave work every morning at 7
a.m. and you want your cabin to be 72 degrees, you can create a schedule so
that your car is pre-warmed every day for work without even thinking about
it. And since there are zero emissions, you can even do this in a garage
that's connected to a house.
