All in all the Nevs’ start of production engage around 2,400 companies globally through the suppliers. “It's been an intense year committed to ensuring Nevs’ start of production. I see our established partnerships as a trustful beginning of the long term and strategic relationships we want to build together with our subcontractors”, said Nevs’ Purchasing Director Per Svantesson . To ensure our high quality and the supply chain functions, the production rate will be very modest, about ten cars a week initially, and then gradually the pace will be increased to meet customers’ demand. The electric car based on the Saab 9-3 will be launched in spring 2014, with China as the first market. Nevs’ partner and part owner Qingdao has initially placed an order for a pilot fleet of 200 electric cars with delivery starting in spring 2014. Qingdao initially invests SEK 2 billion, obtaining a 22 percent ownership share of NEVS through a directed share issue. Further investments will be made in a joint venture company in China. NEVS is headquartered in Trollhättan, Sweden where product development and manufacturing is located. Qingdao’s investment in NEVS will be made in successive stages, and provides NEVS with a financially stable investor, as well as a business partner which provides access to a key market. The City of Qingdao has, through its investment company Qingdao Qingbo Investment Co, Ltd, signed a contract with NEVS’ parent company National Modern Energy Holdings Ltd. and with National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB (NEVS). ”This agreement provides financial resources that form an important contribution to enable implementation of the NEVS business plan,” said NEVS Chairman Karl-Erling Trogen. ”Qingdao is a long term strategic partner in China, which also provides us with a large customer,” said Kai Johan Jiang, CEO and main owner, NEVS. ”Vehicles based on new energy sources are the future. Qingdao wants to take an active part in this development,” said Zhang Xinqi, Mayor of Qingdao. Trollhättan is the NEVS headquarters, with product development and vehicle assembly. China is a key market with great potential demand for Saab vehicles. Qingdao is set to become the hub for NEVS’ efforts in the Chinese market, which means that exports will be shipped through the Port of Qingdao, strategically located on the Chinese East Coast. As production at the Trollhättan plant will reach capacity, a complementary manufacturing facility will gradually be established in Qingdao. The municipality of Qingdao has a population of nine million, while close to 100 million people live in the Shandong province. The City Qingdao is a large buyer of passenger cars, including both conventionally fuelled and electric vehicles. The NEVS investment is an important step to secure the region’s access to electric vehicles, and to build an industrial structure where the vehicle industry, including EVs, is key for the future. As part of the agreement, a feasibility study is now conducted to guide the future partnership. On August 31, 2012, NEVS acquired the main assets of the Saab Automobile bankruptcy estates, and currently studies the opportunity to commence production of the present Saab 9-3 model in the second half of 2013. The first electric vehicle model is planned for launch in early 2014. In October 2012, a sister company of NEVS in China opened a plant in Beijing producing high-performance batteries for automotive applications. It has been established by the owner of National Electric Vehicle Sweden (the manufacturer of the future Saab cars), National Modern Energy Holdings Ltd., which has started manufacturing of batteries for electric-drive buses and cars through its wholly owned subsidiary State Power Group in China. The new battery manufacturer is named Beijing National Battery Technology and is owned by State Power Group (75 percent) together with company management (25 percent). - The batteries are based on Japanese engineering using LFP (lithium iron phosphate, LiFePO4) technology. They deliver high energy density: 146 Wh/kg, exceeding the current offering in the electric vehicle market. - The plant currently employs 75 people, a figure which will grow as production is increased. Additionally, an engineering staff of 30 will work in research and development of battery technology. Batteries are currently delivered for use in urban electric buses in China. The production plant is also intended to be the main battery supplier to the Saab electric vehicles, with the initial model planned for launch in early 2014. “This is important for Nevs. In only seven months from groundbreaking to start of production, we have built a state-of-the-art battery plant,” said Kai Johan Jiang, owner of National Modern Energy Holdings, the parent company of Saab car manufacturer Nevs. “The production capacity is easily scalable, and I foresee us adding more plants to meet the needs of Nevs and the market’s demand for electric vehicle batteries. The battery plant is a result of the Chinese-Japanese collaboration, which also forms the engineering pillar for the future Saab electric vehicles. Already today, our batteries have very competitive specifications, and still some 18 months remain before launch of the first Saab EV model.” For more information please contact: Mikael Östlund, Public Relations Officer - - - - - About: Nevs National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB (Nevs) builds on the Saab legacy of innovative power, quality, progressive design and a firm commitment to environmental and safety issues. Our aim is to be a front-runner in the automotive industry, with focus on electric vehicles. Car buyers today can choose between different propellants with the majority opting for non-renewable, fossil fuels. This is natural, since the alternatives are few, still considered expensive and volumes are low. However, with the environmental challenges we face today and the dwindling supply of oil, market conditions are changing. This is a market change we intend to leverage. Our vision is to shape mobility for a more sustainable future. Electric vehicles charged with green electricity are the passion and purpose that drove our main owner, Mr Kai Johan Jiang, to found National Electric Vehicle Sweden and buy the assets in the Saab Automobile bankruptcy estates. We will create solutions for a more sustainable automobile experience through our own research and development resources combined with external research and engineering excellence. We are dedicated to offering an exceptional Saab experience in our vehicles. Sweden and the Swedish market is our home and our headquarters are in Trollhättan, where we design and manufacture our vehicles. It is also the centre of our research and development efforts. Within the international group of companies we belong to, there exists today a world leading company within the green energy sector based on biomass, as well as companies within the manufacturing and sales of batteries for electric vehicles in China. Research in the battery technology sector with the focus on future solutions for electrified propulsion and new light materials based on nano and graphen technology is jointly conducted in Sweden, China and Japan. We will launch our electric vehicle in China during 2014. Today, China is the market with the most ambitious plans for changing its vehicle fleet into electric vehicles. This includes the development of infrastructure to facilitate the charging of these vehicles. For years to come, electric vehicles and vehicles with conventional engines will co-exist in the market. Even if most people could satisfy their transportation needs, based on driving profile and geography and with an electric vehicle today, everyone is not yet prepared to take that step. The production of Saab 9-3 Aero Sedan with a petrol engine has started. The production rate in the factory will start at a very modest pace to ensure product quality and to make sure the supply chain functions. We offer the first production series of Saab 9-3 Aero Sedan cars to customers in Sweden and China. Over time we will develop our customer base to expand beyond China and Sweden and enter markets where it makes sound business sense to do so. Over many years, the distinctive attributes and fun-to-drive spirit of the Saab cars have created a customer base that is one of the industry’s most satisfied and loyal. We want to give our customers a first class and engaging customer experience. To do this, we offer them the opportunity to come to the heart of the Saab brand in Trollhättan to take delivery of their vehicles. While doing so, they can also visit our highly efficient factory with experienced and competent workers and the Saab Car Museum where they can get a flavour of the heritage of our brand and vehicles. To ensure a solid ownership experience we offer service and parts distribution through our partnership with Orio AB (formerly known as Saab Automobile Parts AB). We build on our Swedish heritage; our products carry with them our Scandinavian design tradition, where form follows function and the high-tech innovative solutions that make them such fun-to-drive cars. We are proud to be able to start this journey with our customers only 458 days after the acquisition. Together we will develop the strength of the Saab brand, taking it into a future where we intend to make a difference. /John _______________________________________________ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org For EV drag racing discussion, please use NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)
