It's the result of what I call a dynamic blind spot.  It's surprisingly
common to find your motion and that of a ped or other vehicle combine so
the hazard remains obscured behind an A pillar.  It wasn't much of a
problem until A pillars got so big.  The only solution for an individual is
to be aware of it and get used to getting up out of the seat to see what
needs to be seen.
