Hi David, I hope you don't mind, I am doing sort of fact checking on this. I am blessed to be in close proximity to the FREEDM Center at the university here (http://www.freedm.ncsu.edu/) and they do a lot of work with lithium batteries, so I have people to quiz.
I called the fellow there I have some acquaintance with, and asked about cold charging. He did not know of this Lithium plating, and couldn't think of a reason why there should be a problem. I asked specifically about LiFePO4. There are so many chemistries - do you know if the VW test was on some other chemistry? I will keep trying to learn more and pass it on.
