I believe I understand ev-blue's point that 'a lot' of effort went into
the Lunar lander, meaning that cars do not need to be that complex.
I will assume the Lunar lander you mentioned is of the 1969 vintage (as
their are now newer ones). In that era, there were few integrated
circuits (chips) and most of the hardware was of discreet (individual)
components, and much of the programing was 'rom' (a read-only memory
chip) based.
These did not contain much software when compared to today's tablet or
hand-held computers of today, that everyone is so addicted to (sidebar:
people walk around here oblivious to their surroundings, so much in
their own world, muggers steal/snatch-n-grab them right out of their
hands and run).
I mention that to let you see that you might want to use a different /
more-up-to-date metaphor to stress your point of how complex automakers
make their products.
A local EAA member drives a 1941 Ford flatbed farm truck that had a
4barrel-V8 ice dropped into it. That vehicle was only designed to go at
most 50mph, but he would lead-foot around traffic at 80mph with the rear
end slipping a sliding around on turns. He said he hated the gas mileage
but loved the simplicity of the ice (no computer controlled fuel
injection modules).
The 1940's did have car radios and other do-dads that the buying public
spent way too much money on. As a boy in the late 1950's, I got hear the
mechanical vibrator chopper in those tube radios (and thought that
design was so lame - but those were the days before transistors).
While ev-blue may want cars to stay simple, the buying public will want
today's do-dads/toys to play-with & use. Some people may opt for an
Amish-like simpler life, but the times are changing all around us. Gone
are many of the public pay phones (because there are so many cell phones
around). Gone are most of the out-of-date when they were printed paper
telephone books (people get up-to-date info on line along with yelp
listings of people's experiences, etc.), and it is a must to know how to
use an ATM (else you're screwed).
Perhaps building or even having an on-board infotainment/computer is not
ev-blue's cup of tea, but that is where the profits are, so that is the
direction the automakers have moved as capitalism reigns-supreme for
profit-seeking companies in the U.S.A.
Of course at the same time in the U.S.A., individuals like my EAA-bud
who likes his less-complex (antique) carburetored ice, can choose to
live the simpler live. But as we have seen with the Amish trying to
struggle to live&survive with the non-Amish rules and regulations all
around them, it makes running your business in that less-complex way
tougher to gain enough profits to pay the bills.
I ask that ev-blue to be tolerant of the complex_do-dad addicted types
when they ask him to to build or repair one of his conversions for them?
