I haven't read the Llewellyn article yet. He does a Youtube video series
called 'Fully Charged' which is quite good as he is very keen, not very
technically minded and - I think - rather amusing. He is best known in the UK
for playing the part of a robot in a sit-com TV series called Red Dwarf -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Dwarf - which was also rather good, but
probably not generally to US tastes. Quirky doesn't really cover it.

I really enjoy driving the Ion (i-miev) but will think long and hard about
attempting another long distance trip unless I can see evidence of some serious
money being spent on improving the fast charge (L3) situation here.
Ecotricity's efforts, though laudable, just are nowhere near enough.

On a more directly EV related side note to the last trip, its purpose was to
collect a full set of EV drive train parts from a chap who bought much of the
UK side of the Azure Dynamics fire sale - yes they were at it over here too! I
didn't know. So, Siemens motor, controller, transaxle, A/C compressor, PTC
heater (co-incidentally the same one as is fitted in the Ion), 2 x water pumps,
Brusa 3.3kW charger and split radiator (one side for the motor, the other for
the controller). It all fitted in the back of the Ion beautifully (mostly
de-boxed) - with its completely flat load area with the back seats down and a
level threshold - and didn't appear to upset the handling one jot. The motor
weighs 85kg and the controller and transaxle another 50 or so. Got the lot -
all still in original boxes - for £2100 ($3400)! Bargain of a life time, I
think. (Sorry, Jack!) Getting them all working is another matter, of course.
I'm planning to put them in my Austin Healey replica.
