Bob Rice told of participating in the coast-to-coast Great Electric Car
Race (in 1968, I think it was). One team from MIT raced west, as another
team from Caltech raced east. Caltech won, BTW: They made the trip in
about 8 days, and averaged 300 wh/mile.
They had to charge as fast as they could, wherever they could! There
were harrowing tales of the students climbing utility poles to clip on
their own "pole pig" transformer, to charge at 440v and 200 amps, while
they dumped bags of ice on the batteries to keep them from boiling!

persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all
progress depends on the unreasonable man. -- George Bernard Shaw
