I remember all the news reports about this event.  It was quite a curiosity, 
and media were less driven by profit and corporate goals, so it got plenty 
of coverage.  Much of the coverage was relatively favorable, although it 
tended to be along the lines of "Look at these crazy kids! Eh, don't try 
this at home."  

But I'd forgotten - if I ever knew - that the MIT crew had had to bail on 
the BLDC motor, and use a conventional brushed DC motor.
