Bruce,
For continued anti-virus protection (after you have switched off WinXP's
auto-update, so it does not bother you with warnings of it being
non-supported) you can go to one of the free (for private use)
solutions, such as Avira's Antivir: http://www.avira.com/en/index
Besides that program, I typically install Safer Networking's Spybot to
protect the browser against access to known unsafe pages:
http://www.safer-networking.org/
and the plug-in Ghostery for Firefox to block all pop-ups, beacons and
other stuff that is not related to the page you are requesting, which
makes the pages load much faster, but sometimes break if they rely on
data that is generated dynamically. So for select pages I will
"whitelist" a page if it does not work otherwise:
https://www.ghostery.com/download

Subject: [EVDL] OT : Microsoft blocking EVDL

I hope all those being affected will use one of the evdl.org archives in
the interim.
But I am hearing 'Captain Obvious' say, its time to switch to a
non-blocked email host.

On an OT rant about MS, which is only slightly related to evdl use ...
One of the PCs I use when running WinXP came up with a MS Update wanting
to add a K######## update/patch that would tell me MS is ending support
for WinXP. The page for that patch also said not only would there no
longer be further bug fixes for WinXP OS, but MS Security Essentials
would not be receiving updates (no more protection).

That PC is not that old, so could run a newer version of MS OS, perhaps
Win7, as I found I really did not like Win8.1 (the gui was like using a
tablet or cell phone). But that would only be a short term fix until
Win7 is dropped as well. Personally, I really do not have much need to
use a MS Windows OS: there are only a couple of things I do use, but can
easily do on other OS'.

So what I plan to do, is keep getting any updates up until that cut off
point, and afterward, disable the networking on that MS WinXP partition.
I can remove the protection software off of it (anti-virus, etc.), which
will speed it up, so if I ever wanted to use it on a file, it should
perform better.

Otherwise, I get all the connectivity I want on other OS'. In my case I
have three different flavors of Linux also on that and other PCs that
will do what I want nicely. My personal preference is to use (each is on
their own partition):
pclinuxos64-lxde-2013.12.iso
 along with
linuxmint-13-cinnamon-dvd-64bit.iso
 and
precise-5.7.1-retro.iso
as alternatives/backup OS. The first (pclos) is fast but less robust as
Mint (has the whole-enchilada/full-monty of apps, tools, etc.), and the
last (puppy) is very fast and simple/easy to use, but less robust than
 pclos.

BTW, a search on MS Win8.1 tells a sad tale of its awful sales, and
chatter of a future version being offered to students for free to get
them hooked on Bing related apps. IMO I can understand why MS is losing
OS market share ... you really have to not like their way of doing
business.
<rant off />
