I was SA for a System V Unix box at a university 1984-1990 and thought it
was pretty cool that I could email a friend who worked at AT&T in NJ. I had
to give the complete path to her machine in the address. My machine stored
net mail and forwarded it to another machine at the university a couple
times a day. IIRC, that machine was configured the same way. It took a
while for email to get to its destination.

I think I first was on the EVDL in '94, maybe late '93, so Bruce was well
ahead of me.

For a while I shared my boss's email account. Our place ran a Major BBS
under MSDOS and we sent and received net mail through Major's portal
software to a local university's mailserver. It transferred email in the
wee hours.

I had a program on my home computer that grabbed all the Major BBS mail for
offline reading. I got up early every day to download the EVDL messages to
my computer and clear them out of the boss's mailbox, so he wouldn't fuss at
me for "that weird stuff of yours." Evantually, the BBS's sysop gave me my
own account. (I had a Compuserve account too - their diskette came with
Spry Mosaic! - but the Major BBS account was free. ;-)

I still have some of the EVDL messages from those days. Some are lost,
however. Regrettably I archived them on 5.25" floppy discs, thinking those
would be safer than the 20mb (later 40mb) winchester drive in my computer.
They weren't. :-(

Dang it, now I'm feeling old. ;-)
