I'm a few years (probably decades) ahead of you.  I did read some Forrest 
Mims, but most of what I know I learned from Alfred P Morgan! ;-)

As an old-timer, an electrical / electronic hacker, and an electrical 
engineering dropout (really), I enjoy reading these exchanges.  

I've been following Lee Hart's solutions to EV problems for 20 years now.  I 
love them for their directness and elegance.  Better  yet, once he explains, 
I can usually understand how they work, despite the fact that my electronics 
background is almost entirely "Here, build this circuit.  Oh, and here's how 
it works."

You might say that Lee Hart is the Yoda of EVs.  Thnk hard before you 
dismiss his wisdom.
