Michael, The reports about the Prius being a loss-leader or no-margin for Toyota may have come from the early years, the Classic Prius did not make enough money to completely get return on investment, but in the year of the introduction of the second generation (2004) Toyota publicly stated that they had achieved break-even point for the Prius, even while that was still doubted by some domestic manufacturers - I remember a report from GM stating that their engineers could not figure out how Toyota could make the Prius - it was too complex and cost was estimated to be too high to ever make a profit, while Toyota had already done that. Says more about GM, I guess.
Toyota would have never made the Prius a sub-brand with different vehicle lines if it was not successful and contributing to their profit.
