A couple of times when I've wanted to create a small, simple schematic, and didn't want to learn (or buy) a new program just for that, I've used GIMP and some canned symbols I found on the web. Once you get the hang of drawing lines and dots, it goes decently fast.
The only problem is that it's hard to change things later unless you make every connection a new layer in your drawing. That's not too bad for small diagrams, but for a moderately complex circuit, I think that keeping the layers straight would be nigh onto impossible. I also found a truetype font with electronic symbols http://radiomagonline.com/tutorials_tips/engineers_notebook/radio_electronic_ symbols_true/ That seemed like a good idea, but I couldn't figure out how to draw lines in my word processor. :-( So I tried using use the TT font symbols in GIMP. That sort of worked, IIRC, but didn't seem any easier than using the canned graphics-file symbols. In the end, I found it easiest and fastest to just haul out my old drawing board and T square, and then scan the finished drawing.
