Dave,

I use GIMP, it is an incredible program, but it is way to much trouble for
diagramming.  Seriously - try out Dia for down and dirty.  I hate to think
of you doing that with GIMP.

I use a combination of GIMP, Inkscape, and Dia for all sorts of stuff, all
very nice.  GiMP is a photoshop substitute, Inkscape is vector graphics,
and Dia supplants Visio (both of these do line banding when attached to a
symbol).
