The audacious plan by electric-car maker Tesla Motors to install its own
network of free, high-speed charging stations for owners of Tesla cars is
starting to pay off.

This morning, it announced that its 100th Supercharger site is now open, in
Hamilton Township, New Jersey--east of the state capital of Trenton, and
less than 40 miles northeast of Philadelphia.

The new station is located in the Hamilton Market Place mall, just off
Interstate 195, and just a few miles from interchanges with both the New
Jersey Turnpike and Interstate 195. It has six charging stalls and will be
open around the clock.

It's also the first Supercharger located in New Jersey, a state that
recently chose to bar Tesla's direct-sales model.

The 100th Supercharger station is the 86th station to go live in the United
States; Tesla also has six stations in Norway--where the Model S has sold
extraordinarily well due to huge government incentives--along with four in
Germany, two in The Netherlands, and one each in Austria and Switzerland.

Thursday morning at 10 am, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony that
includes "Tesla corporate staff," according to an invitation sent to Model S
owners in the region.

The event offers the chance for the company to promote a celebratory
collection of electric-car owners and fans who presumably support Tesla's
desire to sell directly.

An invitation sent to nearby Model S owners asks for an RSVP, including the
number of guests planning to attend.

And, it warns, "Due to the expected volume of Model S owners, there may be a
wait for charging. Please plan accordingly."

That very issue speaks to the number of cars that Tesla has now sold--likely
35,000 or more globally--along with the reach of its expanding Supercharger
network.
