A couple things to note here -

Not every house is sited well, this can cause more panels to be mounted for
a given kW output, if there is space and light for them.

Incentives need to to be checked for EACH location and there is no
consistency from state to state, and municipality to municipality.

The less expensive panels and inverters are not as risk free as the higher
end equipment. The output will drop more over time.

I chose to own my system and spec'ed the best equipment. My Sunpower
panels can make the level of power we use because they make more watts per
area on my smallish roof. Also these panels will have better efficiency at
the end of warranty (25 years, bonded, parts and labor) than any of the
other panels currently available will have when new. That is essentially
prepaid repairs until far beyond payback. I am sure panels will improve.

My cost per watt installed is quite a bit higher $5.35/W before incentives
and $1.85 after , but the payback is still there. And the risk is much
lower.

Another issue often overlooked is homeowners insurance. I now have a
system with a replacement cost of $30K, which is significant. How does that
work with anything other than owned by homeowner systems? Not a
rhetorical question, I do not know. What if, you had a twister take it all
away? What is you liability and responsibility then?

I am interested in Solarcity. They offer a way for people with less funds
and credit to get solar on their house. But, I have not figured out quite
how they operate in all the various situations that people find themselves
in vis a vis their utility and local government.
