No, it's not $500 per charge.  In fact, with the Tesla, charging at Tesla-
owned high-power charging stations is FREE!

He was doing some rather esoteric math that applies to only one specific use 
of a Tesla.  

I had to read the post several times to get it, but I think he's saying that 
"IF I had this particular commute, and IF I bought a long-range Tesla, and 
IF I only drove it to work, and IF I only used it for a year, I'd be paying 
$500 more per day for range I didn't need." 

That's a lot of IFs, but the fundamental argument at the core - that you 
should buy only as much EV range as you really need - is sound.
