[image http://cdn.ecomento.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/tesla-model-x.jpg Tesl X SUV ] Walk into a Tesla Motors store – the ones found in malls and on street corners, where you can see and order one of the company’s sedans – and you’ll find naught concerning the most eagerly anticipated electric car ever conceived. That’s strange, isn’t it? But there’s a reason for it: Tesla won’t start building the Model X SUV until early next year, and in the meantime it intends (and needs) to sell roughly 25,000 examples of the hugely successful Model S. The California carmaker might not manage that if it sells a Model X build slot to everybody who turns up to place the requisite $5,000 deposit, and it has admitted to practicing ‘anti-selling’. “Let’s just put the [Model X] orders into context,” CEO Elon Musk told investors during a recent conference call. “There are no cars available for a test drive. There is no information about the cars in our stores because we’re only selling the [Model] S.” “In fact, if somebody comes in who want to buy the X, we try to convince them to buy the S. So we anti-sell it. And we don’t really provide all that much information or details about the car. Despite all that, there’s huge demand from around the world for the X.” Musk’s approach might be questionable to many marketers. The practice of moving the buyer’s attentions onto another product is commonplace, but ‘upselling’, as the name suggests, generally involves focusing on a more expensive product. The Model X will likely be slightly more expensive that the Model S, though, so why the downsell? The need to shift the Model S in increasing volumes is one good reason, but another is that the company already has a substantial number of Model X sales on its books. Musk’s extraordinary confidence with the electric SUV is backed by hard numbers – without any conventional advertising Tesla has taken nearly 20,000 deposits. In fact, order one today and you’ll be waiting more than a year to take delivery; such has been the scurry to acquire one. The company’s projections suggest that by the end of 2015 more than 2,000 Model X’s could leave its plant in Fremont each week – almost triple the production rate that the Model S currently boasts. The only advice we can offer to those who really want a Model X is stick to your guns in a Tesla store or place an order from the relative safety of your own computer.
