The same video as on the above news item was played 9/2 @8:15pm pst on TBS
channel showing Conan reruns.
It is still a good ad for EVs. Though it is well made, its EV message is
much more subtle for my liking (it does not scream EV enough). I suppose
that was what KIA wanted, to not dwell on the EV part and focus on its
coolness.
I have already previously seen Leaf and 500e TV ads. This one seems to be
readying the consumer as Kia is planning its U.S. Kia Soul EV launch in
November 2014. I suppose running their ad during Conan's reruns saved some
money for them. But on the other hand, the other major talk show hosts are
also running reruns of their show, so perhaps coverage will still be good
(with nothing else to watch people will tune in and see the EV ad?).
IMO The Kia Soul EV is going to open up a larger or family EV market. While
it is true the RAV4-EV gen2 was supposed to do that, TMC threw tons-o-$ at
it (working with Tesla) but did not take its design serious (no L3, and many
more items that should been designed in).
Perhaps once this Kia EV is a winner, in future generations, it will have a
200 mile range option (something the media has been gaga about, but will
never be satisfied about, always wanting more and more range, etc.).
I think with a 100 mile range and a L3 charging ability at an affordable
price is good for the EV market. Both the Nissan eNV200 van and Kia Soul EV
will fill a niche that has gone unsatisfied.
