It’s become a hallowed tradition: a photographer captures the handing over
of the keys to the first customer of a new EV just hitting the market. Thus,
the car company turns the event into a photo op, and a way to announce that
the battery-powered car is officially on sale. Volkswagen, weeks away from
offering the 2015 E-Golf to customers, is putting a new spin on selecting
the first buyer of its first electric car by offering it to the highest
bidder in a charity auction.

Volkswagen of America and Global Green USA today announced the launch of the
E-Golf auction. Proceeds will benefit Global Green USA, a national
environmental non-profit. The auction is already live at:
Charitybuzz.com/vwegolf.

For nearly two years, Volkswagen executives have expressed interest in
becoming a leader in vehicle electrification. The E-Golf represents the
first tangible step that backs VW’s intent with a vehicle available for
sale. “We’re excited to mark the launch of our first all-electric car with
an auction that raises funds and awareness for Global Green USA’s
groundbreaking work to bring smart, sustainable solutions to communities
nationwide,” said Michael Horn, president and CEO, Volkswagen Group of
America.

The all-new, 2015 Volkswagen E-Golf goes on sale in November, starting at
$36,265 (including destination and delivery) for the fully equipped SEL
Premium model. The SEL is the E-Golf's single trim option.

The battery-powered version of the Volkswagen Golf will join a relatively
crowded field of small battery-powered cars. It stacks up against the Nissan
LEAF, Ford Focus Electric, and Kia Soul EV. The Golf is an ultra-popular
platform that combines comfort, practicality, refinement and the simple
tasteful lines—inside and out.

The E-Golf features a 24.2 kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor
producing 115 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. The electric VW is
expected to sprint from 0-62 mph in just over 10 seconds. That beats the
LEAF by about a second. Top speed is governed to 87 miles per hour. The size
of the E-Golf’s battery pack is right in line with similar EVs, so expect
about 75 to 85 miles of range on a full charge.

Bids will be accepted at Charitybuzz.com/vwegolf until 3:30 p.m. ET on Oct.
29.
