For s special-purpose vehicle out in the middle of nowhere (or even on the 
surface of Mars), it makes sense to carry around the solar panels. Everywhere 
else...fix the panels to the ground where they're optimally positioned and make 
use of every watt-hour they generate.

Generally agree, but it seems solar on the car is sufficient for his specific needs AND more convenient.

Consider that he said: “I have used the bus to go back and forth from school, commute to work on a daily basis—the panels provide enough energy to the batteries I never have to plug in."

If he doesn't have to drive fast or far, I can see how his approach makes sense. Even in the middle of somewhere. :^)
