2014: Gigabillboard? Tesla proposes enormous sign outside Fremont factory
By Chris De Benedetti The Argus 11/19/14

FREMONT -- Those wondering if Tesla Motors and Fremont will continue
strengthening their relationship soon might see a sign.

A very large illuminated sign between Tesla's factory and Interstate 880, to
be exact.

The electric car manufacturer wants to erect the towering, 6,300-square-foot
advertising space outside its South Fremont compound, where it will promote
its new vehicles.

The Fremont Planning Commission will consider Tesla's proposal Thursday
night.

"It's big, but I think it's important for people to see that Tesla is here
in Fremont," said Mayor Bill Harrison. "I support them branding themselves
and them putting it out there that we're the home of Tesla."

The company's logo already is prominently displayed on the factory's facade
next to I-880, near the Milpitas border.

Asked Wednesday why bigger, newer signage is needed, Tesla representative
Koohyar Fard Arya replied: "Why do people put billboards anywhere?"

"Come to Thursday's meeting and see why," he said.

The company's press office declined to comment.

The 200-by-40-foot sign would be illuminated, according to a city report.
The sign itself would be 30 feet high perched on a 10-foot column.

Fremont bans electronic signage with moving images but allows static images
made more visible by lighting.

Tesla's sign can be twice as high as the city's 20-foot height limit for
billboards because it does not fit the city's definition of a billboard,
said James Willis, a Fremont planner.

"Billboards must be for rent, display off-site advertising and be on a site
with one use," and Tesla's sign does none of those things, Willis said.

Though headquartered in Palo Alto, Tesla Motors is one of Fremont's largest
employers, boasting around 4,000 employees in the city's biggest building,
standing on a 212-acre property.

The property's grand size helped persuade city staffers to recommend
approval for the company's proposal, Willis said.

"The sign is relatively in scale with the rest of the site," he said. "We
wouldn't consider this for a small-size parcel."

The new sign would be the most visible part of the 850-acre Innovation
Center, where Fremont envisions adding up to 4,000 housing units, 12,000
jobs, shopping, restaurants, hotel and convention facilities, and parks near
the Warm Springs-South Fremont BART station, set to open at the end of next
year.

Tesla has been the anchor of that vision and a good partner for Fremont,
where the electric car company has opened a sales room, Harrison said.

"That allows us to capture some sales tax dollars," he said. "They're good
corporate citizens for us, and we should be good partners for them."

FREMONT (KPIX 5) — Billboards are a common sight along Bay Area freeways,
but drivers along the Nimitz could be in for a surprise. Tesla is looking to
install a billboard standing 40 feet tall and stretching 200 feet wide near
its factory in Fremont.

The sign would be installed where there are currently a cluster of poles in
an overgrown lot near Interstate 880.

“I think it’s important for us to say here is Tesla, here they are in
Fremont and they’re very proud of them,” Fremont Mayor Bill Harrison told
KPIX 5.

The sign will practically scream it, with a rendering of a Tesla splashed
across an illuminated sign 40 feet tall and 200 feet wide, roughly the
length of five school buses.

Fremont has strict regulations against billboards, and signs are supposed to
be no taller than 20 feet. But the mayor said he would like to see the
planning commission make an exception for a company that has brought jobs
and big business to the city.

“We want people to know as they drive down 880 that a) they’re in Fremont
and b) the Tesla plant is right here,” Harrison said.

Tesla did not return KPIX 5’s calls asking for comment. The planning
commission is expected to vote on the sign at a meeting Thursday night.

Tesla Plans to Install Sign the Size of a Hockey Rink Outside Its Fremont
Factory

Electric car maker Tesla wants to put up a giant sign near its Fremont
factory that, if approved, would instantly become one of the Bay Area's
biggest. Scott Budman reports. (Published Thursday, Aug 28, 2014)

Electric car maker Tesla wants to put up a giant sign near its Fremont
factory that, if approved, would instantly become one of the Bay Area's
biggest.

Fremont city leaders foresee heavy development in the area along Interstate
880 where Tesla is situated. In addition to a BART station, they want to add
thousands of housing units and thousands of new jobs, too.

Tesla is an anchor of the plan – and the company has an idea to make sure
its brand stands out: Tesla wants to put up a sign that’s 40-feet tall by
200-feet wide, as long as a hockey rink.

"We want people to know that they're in Fremont, Tesla's factory is in
Fremont, and we're very proud of that,” said Bill Harrison, Fremont’s mayor.

That civic pride will, if approved, be on display, lit up and visible 24
hours a day along I-880, showing off one of the Bay Area's most successful
companies.

California Highway Patrol officials said the agency isn’t concerned about
the sign distracting drivers. Motorists NBC Bay Area spoke with agreed.
Besides, San Jose driver Jim O'Brien said, “As long as it's not causing
accidents, and it’s good for the company, it’s good for the Bay Area."

"They're a great company to have around,” Fremont resident Karen Kenaga
said. “I have no problem with any kind of sign. We need the recognition."

Fremont has strict rules for the size of billboards, but the city says those
don’t apply in this case because Tesla says it’s not a billboard, it’s a
sign.

Harrison insists, it's not a sweetheart deal for Tesla, just good business
for his city. “I think we'd be doing this if it wasn't Tesla,” Harrison
said. “If there was a factory here producing something other than awesome
cars, but employing over 4,000 people, I as mayor would make sure we're
doing what we can to help them."

Tesla declined a request to comment on the sign, other than to say it will
have more information available at Thursday night’s planning commission
meeting, which was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Fremont City Hall.
