Registrations of vehicles may be skewed from whom actually uses the car.
My wife "owns" our Prius, even though my name shows on the registration.
In fact, all our cars have always been registered in my name, even
though they were used by all members of the family living in our home.

Funny story - yesterday I saw a model S on the freeway, I could hardly
believe it when I was coming up behind it, until I saw that it was
driven by an elderly lady.
I was overtaking her in my underpowered, golfcart-battery EV truck and I
was barely doing 55 and yes, the road was empty...

When Tesla Motors' extended-delayed Model X -- designed to blend the
finest
of a sport utility automobile with the positive aspects of a minivan --
begins deliveries to customers in late 2015, Tesla will achieve entry to
two
vital and overlapping markets for the auto business: SUV purchasers and
females.

Tesla does not release demographic details about its shoppers, but
ownership
of its all-electric Model S sedan skews decidedly male. In 2013, males
accounted for 85.8 percent of Model S registrations, according to IHS
Automotive, which tracks new vehicle registrations by gender. But the
all-electric X could adjust all that. Smaller SUVs are wildly well known
among female drivers, and Tesla created the X with women in mind.

At Tesla's shareholder's meeting in June, a lady advised CEO Elon Musk
to
make the cars "a little bit additional girls-favored."

"That's a great point," stated Musk. "We're surely paying additional
focus
to the requires of women in the Model X, and I feel you happen to be
appropriate, we probably got a small also guy-centric on the S. So,
we're
hoping to right that with the X."

That is what Lisa Merkord is counting on. Merkord lives in rural Ventura
County and drives her 11-year-old son to college and band practice in
her
Chevy Volt.

But for her 52nd birthday last year, her husband gave her a surprise
present: a reservation for the Model X.

"We genuinely have to have far more seating," stated Merkord. "We live
15
miles from school, and for any type of socializing it indicates
schlepping
youngsters about. This is definitely going to be my automobile. I am
considering we'll get it in September, but I'm willing to wait forever."

The X is also important to Tesla's ambitions as an automaker. Trucks and
SUVs now account for a larger share of the market place than sedans: in
November, pickup trucks and SUVs accounted for 54% percent of new auto
sales, when automobiles have been just 46% percent, according to
Edmunds.com.

At the current Los Angeles Auto Show, smaller sized sport utility
vehicles
like the Honda HR-V crossover and Mazda CX-three generated a lot of
interest.

"If you are a significant automaker, you have to be in the SUV market,"
said
Renee Stephens, vice president of automotive research at JD Power and
Associates. "In the previous 3 years the compact SUV segment has
seriously
grown and Tesla is saying, 'Hey, this is a market place for us. We
require
to get in there.'"

Stephens noted that female purchasers make up roughly 39 percent of the
market for new automobiles, but 44 percent of the SUV marketplace.

Tesla's site stresses that the X is a "household automobile with
performance
roots" and that "you can ultimately reside a significant-car life-style
without the need of living at the pump."

To make sure the design team was on the appropriate track with the Model
X,
Tesla invited a dozen Palo Alto-location females to its headquarters for
a
freewheeling, 3-hour focus group led by Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla's
chief
designer.

There's been a lot of buzz about the Model X's "Falcon Wing" passenger
doors, which have hinges on the best and open up and out of the way,
creating it easier to navigate narrow parking spots.

"Though earning critical style points, they're functional very first,"
says
Tesla on its internet site. "You very easily step, not climb, into Model
X."

The significant trunk is deep enough to match bags of groceries or
camping
and sports gear. The second-row seats slide all the way forward -- even
with
a baby's car seat installed -- which makes it uncomplicated to access a
third row of seats.

The falcon wing doors hold significant appeal for Maggie Brown of
Houston,
who has 4 kids ages 9, 7, four and two. That implies two schools, two
drop-offs, two-pickups, numerous errands and a lot of time behind the
wheel
of her Honda Odyssey minivan.

"We get in and out of the car 20 occasions a day," said Brown, 36, who
place
down a reservation for a Model X in the spring. "I really like the
notion of
the falcon wing doors. I heard that Elon Musk has five children, so this
is
a man who is personally living this trouble of the doors. And let's face
it:
even the nicest minivan you'd ever acquire is not very nice."

Brown, a librarian, did her study -- she talked to good friends who
personal
a Model S, then poked about on Tesla's internet site.

"I sat and watched the video of Musk unveiling the X in 2012, and I was
sold," stated Brown. "Generally if there is good interior seating there
is
not any cargo space. We need both."

Tesla has not disclosed the number of reservations for the Model X but
has
said that "demand has been intense and orders are continuing to come in
at a
fast price."

Tesla has not revealed pricing of the Model X, but it is anticipated to
be
similar in expense to a Model S, which begins at roughly $70,000.

Some prospects put down reservations for a Model X in early 2012. But
not
absolutely everyone is prepared to wait.

Peggy Noonan, 66, of San Jose was interested in a Model X but in no way
put
down a reservation.

"I gave up on a Tesla Model X as they kept pushing out the delivery
date,
and I required to obtain a new vehicle," mentioned Noonan. "I bought an
all-wheel-drive Maserati. I am extremely happy with it, but it really is
not
electric."

Retired flight college manager Gabrielle Adelman and her husband,
Kenneth,
are large electric car advocates who currently own a Roadster, a Model S
and
a Toyota RAV4 EV. Gabrielle Adelman place down a $40,000 deposit to get
an X
"Signature" series -- a restricted production model. The Signature
series
are the 1st 1,200 or so Model X's to be produced Signature reservation
holders tend to be the Tesla faithful.

"The immediate the announcement about the X was initial produced, we put
in
the order," mentioned Adelman. "The interior volume is going to be
definitely nice. Ken is a bee keeper and a diver, and we require a car
that
can hold his hives and diving gear."
