Again, just as with EVs, it's not going to be an universal solution. But, again 
again, even a partial solution is going to make sense for lots of folks. 
Somebody who really does need a diesel pickup to haul stuff around on a regular 
basis may still be a perfect candidate for an EV for a daily commute, and 
somebody who has to have an onsite heating oil storage tank to make it through 
the winter may still see a substantial reduction in costs by tossing several PV 
panels on the roof. And there really are lots and lots and lots of people for 
whom an EV is the ideal only-car solution, just as there really are lots and 
lots and lots of people who could easily produce way more electricity than they 
could ever imagine personally using.

Which, again again again again, is not to diminish the fact that neither EVs 
nor solar are for everybody, and those who need the grid (etc.) really truly do 
need it. Though there are also going to be those who _think_ they need an ICE 
or the grid but actually would be more than happy with an EV or solar....
