BMW somehow fished that clip with Couric and Bryant Gumbel out of the time machine and repurposed it to promote a new, electric BMW. And even if you’re not in the market for such a car, the commercial will generate a few chuckles. The best part is when Couric slyly says, to Gumble, that “maybe” she just might know how to twerk. Of course, the music in the background is “Electric Avenue.” [© chicago.suntimes.com] http://mashable.com/2015/01/26/katie-couric-super-bowl/ BMW's Super Bowl ad takes us back to a time when nobody 'got' the Internet BY TRICIA GILBRIDE [01/26/2015] A new Super Bowl ad for BMW flashes back to a time before memes and Twitter — back when everyone was just started to wrap their heads around the concept of the world wide web. In the clip from 1994, Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel are trying to explain what the Internet is; the "@" symbol proves particularly confusing. The campaign for the BMW i3, an all-electric vehicle primarily composed of carbon fiber, pokes fun at the clumsy way we adapt to new technology. The ad, entitled "Newfangled Idea" includes archival footage from 1994, in which the two Today alumni must tell viewers how to send an email to NBC, but are confused by what the "at" symbol means in the email address format, mistaking it for "about" or "around." "What is 'Internet' anyway, do you write to it like mail?" asks Gumbel while on-air, as Couric asks her producer, "Can you explain what 'Internet' is?" The TV spot then puts Couric and Gumbel inside BMW's new i3 all-electric car, built in a carbon neutral wind-powered factory — a fact that confuses the two hilariously (and gets Gumbel asking if Couric can twerk, to which she responds, "Maybe!"). It premiered on Today on Monday morning, with Couric in tow to talk shooting the spot and revisiting the befuddled moment. "It was the object of ridicule all over the Internet, and I thought it was funny," said Couric of the 1994 clip. "I vaguely remember the segment, but I do remember the sweater and that hair!" The commercial begins in 1994 on the set of the 'Today' Show where Katie and Bryant are trying to understand what this thing called "internet" is all about. Fast forward 21 years and Bryant and Katie are seated in a BMW i3, where they are trying to understand what the all-electric BMW i3 is about. Big ideas take some getting used to, but they often make life easier and all-around better. "BMW i3 - Newfangled Idea" Voiceover Back now at 56 past. I wasn't prepared to translate that. That's right. That little mark with the "a" and then the ring around it. At? See, that's what I said. Um, Katie said she thought it was "about". Yeah. But I've never heard it. Or "around". I've never heard it said. I've seen the mark. There it is. At amfeedback com. I mean, what is that anyway? What, do you write to it like mail? Here's Allison. Can you explain what internet is? See, that's what I said. What do you mean there's nothing under the hood? Katie said she thought this was a car. Yeah. And it's built using wind? Like from a windmill? Or a fan? Or a turbine? Or a fan-bine? Wow. I mean, what is i3 anyway? Allison? Can you explain what i3 is? The all electric BMW i3, built in a wind-powered factory with the strength of carbon fiber and BMW performance. Come on, loosen up, Gumbel. Can you twerk? Maybe.
