The Future Of TV Is Mobile, But Not The Way You Think
2/26/2015 Steven Rosenbaum

Americans are a mobile culture. We’re on the move – all the time. But for
most of us, that means we’re cut off from media. Sure, on the highway we’ve
all driven by a minivan with Shrek playing in a drop down DVD player for the
back seat crowd.

But for us adults, the car is a video free zone. According to a study by the
Harvard Health Watch, an average American spends 101 minutes per day
driving. That means that in a lifetime, an average american spends a
shocking 37,935 hours driving a car (assuming that they start driving at 17
and drives until 78.7 years old.)

Well, cars may not be video-free for much longer. TV has been stuck in the
waking hours we have outside of work. So from 6pm until 10pm – for an
average 5 hours a day according to Nelson, we watch TV. Linear, Broadcast
and Cable TV.

Sure, during the day we get some bites of video – video snacks as my pal
Shelly Palmer calls them. But snacks don’t make a meal.

Well, here’s the big change you didn’t count on. Google, Tesla, and now even
Volvo, are all ready to break wide open a new world of TV viewing.

The media calls them ‘Driverless’ cars, while the industry a bit more
certainly calls them ‘Autonomous Cars’, but any way you cut it, these cars
are going to fast become rolling media rooms, ready to watch – and even
create video of all kinds.

Here’s the math; driverless cars will overtake the highways by 2025. Tesla
Motor’s CEO Elon Musk says that their 2015 Teslas will be able to self-drive
a staggering 90 percent of the time. So much for the warnings about not
texting and driving. Now the message is, go ahead – TEXT Away! Musk says
that by 2020 you’ll have a “true autonomous driving where you could
literally get in the car, go to sleep and wake up at your destination”.
Bloomberg News reports that GM’s 2017 models will feature “technology that
takes control of steering, acceleration and braking at highway speeds of 70
miles per hour or in stop-and-go congested traffic.”

Morgan Stanley’s research shows that today’s American cars are driven just
4% of the time.

But that’s about to change. Uber CEO Travis Kalanick has said that Uber will
eventually replace all of its drivers with self-driving cars. So Uber
drivers, beware, your job is already on the chopping block. The so-called
‘transportation cloud’ is about to arrive. A study by Columbia University
says that with just 9,000 autonomous cars, Uber could replace every taxi cab
in New York City and passengers would wait an average of 36 seconds for a
ride that costs about $0.50 per mile. Ok, that sounds kinda good to me.

So, when my teenage son asks me, “dad, will I need a drivers license to
drive a ‘driverless’ car?” I have to admit, that’s a pretty tricky question,
“um, I guess so”, I answer. “But it’s mostly so you can take over if the
computer crashes.” Yikes, a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘car crash’.

A report from PricewaterhouseCoopers pegs the number of vehicles on the road
will fall dramatically from 245 million to just 2.4 million vehicles. So
America’s car culture history is certainly on the chopping block.

The driverless car future is going to turn all kinds of things upside down.
Jobs as drivers will be lost. Greenhouse gasses will be dramatically
reduced as it is assumed that driverless cars will all be electric. Lives
will be saved as crashes are prevented.

But the big thing here is time. We get time BACK. And video is likely to be
a big winner here. Driverless Car TV, I can’t wait.
