2018 Volkswagen Beetle Announce, EV Model Teased
April 2, 2015

Volkswagen was at the New York Auto Show showing off their Volkswagen Beetle
in conjunction with the Beetle’s 60th anniversary, but they were also there
to announce some exciting news.

According to Volkswagen, fans of the Beetle can expect to see a new
Volkswagen Beetle coming in within these three years. He also added that the
new Volkswagen Beetle will be riding on the scalable MQB platform, the
platform that he say will open up the electric route for the Beetle. Is he
hinting that we might be seeing an electric powered Beetle or maybe a hybrid
Beetle coming in the future?

He also hinted that the Volkswagen Beetle will be coming in with a new
design. This will put all the rumors about Volkswagen killing off the
Volkswagen Beetle line to rest once and for all. As for the Beetles they
brought to the show, Volkswagen did hint that we might see the Denim
convertible heading for production.

Volkswagen keeps teasing us with concepts hinting at the rebirth of the
camper van/microbus. Well, the teasing will continue with yet another van
concept, but this time with an all-electric drivetrain.

VW board member Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neusser said to Autocar at the New York Auto
Show that engineers and designers are working on a new concept that taps
into the classic styling of previous vans.

Neusser told Autocar that the design of the original VW van was “so iconic”
that any attempt at a new model would have to have three “very important”
design cues: “First the wide, solid, D-Pillar, second the boxy design of the
centre section and, thirdly, the front end must have a very short overhang.
The distance from the A-pillar to the front end must be very short.”

Naturally, we’ve seen this kind of thing before, both in 2001 with the
Microbus concept and again in 2010 with the Bulli.

Jason maintains that both of these would make a far better 7-seater than the
slab of Teutonic metal that is the CrossBlue concept, and I agree. Then
again, we’re weird. But think about how well received the new Beetle was
when it came out. A retro-styled microbus could elicit a similar response,
and have some added utility to boot.

On that utility front, the proposed electric drivetrain might be a bit
problematic for the long-haul trips you’d want to take in a camper, but if
VW pulls a Tesla and basically makes the entire underbody a massive slab of
battery, 200+ miles shouldn’t be an issue. Taking out the chunk of engine up
front and replacing it with a compact electric motor could free up the
space, along with providing even more interior room.

It all sounds perfectly plausible, but VW has dangled these things in front
of us before, only to quietly forget about it. Maybe this time will be
different. Probably not, because it’s still just a concept.

Volkswagen Wants the Next Camper to Be All-Electric

Volkswagen are looking to explore and exploit the potential of green
technologies in recent times, and the upcoming VW Camper could be the next
model to feature an all-electric powertrain.

Volkswagen officials confirmed that the carmaker is considering
"electrification and battery power" but there's more than the eco-friendly
purpose behind that.

As unusual as it may sound, VW wants to keep the Camper's old-school look
inspired by the original car born in the 50s. And guess what: the only way
to successfully doing that is by using an electric motor powered by
batteries positioned beneath the floor.

“If we want to do this on an attractive cost base, we are not able to put a
rear engine into such a car. When we put such a vehicle on the base of the
modular transverse kit, we can use it as a battery electric vehicle –
because the e-motor is much smaller than a combustion engine and we can
build it in another way," said Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser in an interview for
Autoexpress, during the 2015 New York International Auto Show.

Mr. Neusser added that VW engineers are working towards this goal, but
didn't give further details about when we should expect the Camper/Bulli EV
concept, but past rumors said it would come in 2019 as a Beetle derivative.

However, his statement hints that the car will be underpinned by VW's MQB
modular platform. Hopefully, designers will be able to keep the recognizable
boxy shape and the signature D-pillars. All we have to do is keep an eye on
future auto shows and see if Volkswagen will keep their word.

Volkswagen confirms return of Camper van but as an EV

The classic Volkswagen Camper van could be revived as a battery-electric
vehicle, according to company board member Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser.

Speaking at the New York Show, Dr Neusser revealed that VW engineers and
designers were working on a new Camper van concept using a small electric
motor driving the front wheels and battery packs stored under the floor.

Neusser told Autocar UK that the design of the original Volkswagen van was
"so iconic" that any attempt at a new model would have to have three "very
important" design cues: "First the wide, solid, D-Pillar, second the boxy
design of the centre section and, thirdly, the front end must have a very
short overhang. The distance from the A-pillar to the front end must be very
short."

The key to achieving the unique front-end design is the fact that an
electric motor would allow a much lower "bonnet line" than a conventional
petrol engine. This, in turn, would allow the A-pillars to be placed much
further forward than in a conventional MPV.

Such a car, he said, with an attractive cost base could make it into
production. Work on the concept was currently ongoing at Volkswagen, Dr
Neusser confirmed.

VW considers electric Camper van

Volkswagen is reportedly considering a Camper van revival, but with an
electric powertrain.

The idea isn't exactly new for the brand, surfacing in 2001 as a Microbus
revival and again in 2011 as the Bulli concept. The latter model was
presented as an EV with a 40 kWh battery and a 186-mile range, with 114
horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque, however the project was killed in 2012.

The Camper EV follows the same theme, utilizing an electric motor to keep
its iconic shape without having to extend the nose to fit a modern
internal-combustion engine, as a rear-engine layout is now out of the
question. Speaking to Autocar at the New York auto show, VW board member Dr.
Heinz-Jakob Neusser suggests a revival will need to maintain several other
design elements that helped define the original.

"First the wide, solid, D-Pillar, second the boxy design of the centre
section and, thirdly, the front end must have a very short overhang," he
said. "The distance from the A-pillar to the front end must be very short."

The company never fully explained why the Bulli never came to fruition, but
battery prices were one potential deal breaker. A recent study by the
Stockholm Environment Institute suggests automakers were still paying over
$400 per kWh in 2014, equating to more than $16,000 just for the Bulli's
battery pack, but prices are expected to fall below $250 per kWh within the
next two years.

Neusser notes that VW designers are currently working on a fresh concept,
expected to resemble the Bulli, however a time-frame for introducing the new
van has not been publicly confirmed.
