[image http://cdn.autoconnectedcar.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/2014Fiat500E.jpg (Orange-colored 500e EV) ] FCA (Fiat Chrysler Autos) recalled about 2013-2015 Fiat electric cars in the U.S. to upgrade the software due to a problem with losing power while driving due to a software problem with “limp-in” mode. Fiat calls the 500e “Eco-Chic in the Modern World.” There was an investigation after FCA received reports that some customers experienced power loss while driving. They are not aware of any related injuries or accidents, and drivers who experienced the condition were able to restart their vehicles. Affected are certain Fiat 500e hatchbacks. The cars are equipped with software that induces “limp-in mode,” an EV feature that reduces propulsion as a precaution, if the vehicle detects a problem. Engineers determined some of these vehicles are equipped with a software version that does not recognize limp-in mode. This may cause the vehicles to shut down completely. Affected owners will be notified when they may schedule a free software upgrade, which will restore limp-in mode capability. Fiat 500e sales have increased greatly, with discounts in the last few months. TrueCar.com is showing prices at $2,535 below MSRP.While Edmunds.com is showing around $3,702 off the MSRP. There was buying frenzy last month when it was reported the Fiat 500e models were being leased for less than $100 month. [© 2015 Aproprose] http://ecomento.com/2015/04/14/fiat-500e-recall-for-software-fault-2015/ Electric FIAT 500e recall for software fault April 14, 2015 | Every FIAT 500e sold in the US and manufactured prior to October 31, 2014 will be subject to a recall to fix a software glitch that could cause the car’s electric powertrain to shut down completely – not something you want to happen when pulling into traffic in front of a speed cement mixer. About 5,600 vehicles are affected. In a notice dated April 11, 2015, the company said “incompatible software between the Electric Vehicle Control Unit and the Battery Pack Control Module may cause the electric propulsion system to fully shut down.” The glitch that is the subject of the recall notice was created in March of 2014 by a software update intended to improve “charging system robustness, diagnostic capability and range estimation over life.” But after the update, the Electric Vehicle Control Unit software could not recognize a limp home mode added by the update, potentially causing the drivetrain shutdown. On October 31, 2014, the software for cars then in production was updated to eliminate the problem. FIAT has offered no explanation for why it waited 5 months to notify owners. This is the third FIAT 500e recall for the diminutive electric car. In June, 2014, all cars manufactured to that point were recalled due to a coolant leak in their power inverter modules. Coolant could leak onto high voltage components causing a fuse to blow. In that case as well a loss of power could occur. In 2013, the cars were recalled to fix faulty half shafts that could come apart while driving, leading to a loss of power and possibly a loss of control. FIAT dealers authorized to service the electric Fiat 500 will update the software after owners receive a letter about the recall directing them to contact their local dealer. Owners can contact Fiat at 1-888-242-6342. The recall notice can be found on the SaferCar website operated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
