Four-Person EV Concept Is Designed To Be Able To Float

One of the biggest concerns surrounding climate change is rising ocean
levels and increasingly catastrophic storm events that lead to major
flooding. Flooded disaster areas can be all but unreachable via conventional
vehicles, even if they happen to have access to hard-to-find fuel.

While one may not think electric cars and water would mix well, the
designers behind the FOMM Concept One thinks its tiny, four-person EV could
provide life-saving assistance, flooding be damned. Weighing in at just
1,104 lbs, the FOMM Concept One uses two electric motors making a total of
just 12 horsepower but over 400 lb-ft of torque, and a “water-jet generator”
allows the operator a minimal amount of maneuverability in deep water. While
not quite an amphibian, it is watertight enough to survive the kind of
soaking that would seize up a conventional engine.

FOMM forgoes a traditional steering wheel for a motorcycle handlebar style
setup, and traditional doors are replaced with sliding doors that allow
access even in extremely tight areas. There is seating for up to four
people, or two people and some cargo, though there’s nothing one could call
an actual cargo area. It’s less “rescue” vehicle and more of a “Let’s get
the hell outta here” type of transportation.

There are more benefits to EVs in disaster areas than just being waterproof
though. Getting gasoline to hard-hit areas can be all but impossible when
roads are washed out, but the combination of electric cars and solar panels
makes filling up a lot easier. The quiet operation of EVs also could allow
rescuers to better hear those in need of help.

Though the FOMM Concept One is just that, a concept, it’s another example of
how electric vehicles could benefit first responders to disaster areas.
