First South American Electric Manned Plane Put to Test in Paraguay
[June 24, 2015]

ASUNCION – Itaipu hydroelectric power plant, the second largest producer of
energy in the world, shared by Paraguay and Brazil, on Tuesday put to test
its Sora-e aircraft in the Paraguayan city of Hernandarias, and was
presented as “the first electric manned aircraft of South America.”

The plane has space only for the pilot and a passenger and is powered only
by batteries and has a flight range of an hour and a half, according to a
statement released on the Binacional Itaipu dam website.

The apparatus, which is 8 meters long (26 feet) and weighs 650 kilograms
(1433 pounds), is made of carbon fiber and can reach a cruising speed of 190
kph (118 mph) with a maximum of 340 kph (211 mph).

“For Itaipu, this is a huge progress. We are always researching and trying
to develop electric vehicles that have a greater range,” said Salim
Morinigo, consulting engineer of Sustainable Mobility of Itaipu.

He added that, for the company, the development of this prototype meant an
investment of $90,000, a figure much lower than the selling price of these
already developed devices, which is around $900,000.

Furthermore, the director general of the Brazilian part of Itaipu, Jorge
Samek, assured that this unit reinforces the commitment of Paraguay and
Brazil in the development of clean technologies with low environmental
impact.

“Itaipu is already a reference in the area of sustainable electric mobility
with electric cars and buses, and intelligent systems for monitoring. Now it
is also standard in the aircraft industry,” he said.

Sora-e aircraft was developed out of an agreement between ACS aviation, an
entity linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and
Innovation, and Itaipu, and are also working on an Electronic Vehicle
program.

Itaipu is the second largest hydroelectric plant in the world with an
installed capacity of 14,000 megawatts, of which Paraguay uses only a 10
percent despite having right to half.

The remainder is sold to Brazil.
