And, Nomadic Power enables the utilisation of clean energies: Pick up an Nomad at a highway fast charging station and exploit the electric energy of the Nomad. Return the Nomad to a station in your destination area. Drive with your own electric car battery within your destination area. It's so easy. Let's change the look of highway traffic.] When it tested its EV1 electric car in California in the 1990s, General Motors needed a way to extend the two-seater’s relatively short range in order to gather certain data. So it put generators on trailers, which were hitched up to the test vehicles. Now, a German startup company is promoting a way to extend electric-car ranges that seems like an update of that improvised solution. Nomadic Power just received a 2 million euro ($2.2 million) grant from the European Commission for its “MobileBattery,” which is essentially a lithium-ion battery pack mounted on a trailer, and towed behind an electric car. The company claims it will be able to produce 40-kilowatt-hour or 85-kWh battery packs. The latter is the same size as the pack in the longest-range Tesla Model S, and it’s enough to boost a shorter-range electric car to 373 miles, Nomadic says. The mobile battery pack includes its own control software that is “self learning,” allowing it to predict energy use and the performance of any home solar array sued to charge it. The system also uses a 4G LTE connection to access a cloud platform that Nomad will use to monitor customer devices, as well as to home energy-management systems. Nomadic says provisions can also be made to allow for fast charging of the packs. That may mean electric-car drivers will have to top off both their cars’ built-in battery pack and the trailer separately at stops, prolonging the process. Putting batteries in a trailer is a simple solution to the problem of range anxiety, but it’s unclear how many people will want to tow something around on a regular basis, even if it gives their plug-in the range of an internal combustion car. The Nomadic Power battery trailer could be a workable option for the occasional long trip, but a more streamlined solution is likely required to address most electric cars’ short ranges.
