I too have seen increased water usage in older batteries.  I don't recall 
noticing some batteries or cells using dramatically more, but then it's not 
something I paid a lot of attention to.  I've mostly just stuck the gurgler 
can in and let it go until it stopped when watering.

I think the reason for the increased water use may be that most automatic 
chargers keep trying to charge old batteries to the same finishing voltage 
as when they were new.  An aging battery has a lower fully-charged voltage 
because it's lost active material. 

However, I'm just a hobbyist, not an electrochemist.
