That's how Solectria got their early Forces down from over 200 Wh/mi to 150-160 Wh/mi. It's also how they managed to triple the price of the base ICE Geo Metro they were building on, which limited their sales to institutions with deep pockets. Some of the difference could indeed be the motor and inverter/controller, but my impression is that the state of the art in electronically commutated motors is so high that once you're past the mass market rubbish the efficiency difference is seldom more than a percentage point or two.
