In an unprecedented move towards sustainability in the Toronto condo market, Minto is launching an electrifying offer to purchasers of Bside, the second phase of Minto Westside at Bathurst and Front Sts. Buy a parking space equipped with an electric vehicle (EV) charging station along with your condo, and Minto will throw in Canada’s top-selling, fully electric car, the Nissan LEAF, for free. Bside at Minto Westside is strategically situated close to a network of streetcars, making city travelling accessible to future residents. The introduction of level 2 EV chargers and the Nissan LEAF incentive program not only makes owning an electric car viable for purchasers looking to extend their transit options, it raises awareness around the current lack of infrastructure in Canada’s condo market. A leader in sustainability, Minto is widely recognized for developing energy efficient design-forward spaces. Since 2006, Minto has certified over 2,800 units using various LEED programs on a variety of projects in Toronto, including MintoMidtown – North America’s largest condominium to achieve LEED Gold certification. Starting from the low $200s, Bside offers state-of-the-art, design-forward suites from a price point rarely seen in the downtown market. The Nissan LEAF was launched in 2010 as the first 100 per cent electric vehicle for the mass market. It is currently the best-selling electric vehicle ever with more than 188,000 units sold worldwide. In September, the zero-emission model from Nissan beat its own Canadian sales record by recording an increase of 27.4 per cent over the same period last year. The first 20 purchasers of a condo in the new Bside at Minto Westside development in downtown Toronto will get a new Nissan LEAF EV at no extra charge, the company said in a press release late October. “Installing EV chargers at Bside gives residents who want a vehicle in the city the ability to make an affirmative environmental decision,” explained Wells Baker, director of conservation and sustainable design for Minto. “That alone is a huge step forward, but we wanted to take that next step and actually incentivize a decision towards the more sustainable option.” Minto is building an electrical transformer into its Bside development specifically to handle electric vehicle charging, something most other high-rise buildings haven’t done, and is also blocking off space for additional EV chargers in anticipation of future demand. Offering condo buyers a free Nissan LEAF, Canada’s best-selling all-electric car, is something else no other company has done in Toronto, either. “Accessible charging is an important consideration when people are looking at buying an electric vehicle and is especially challenging for those living in a condominium or apartment,” Steven Rhind, director of marketing at Nissan Canada, said in the release. “Minto Bside’s commitment to integrating EV charging infrastructure is an important step in expanding the adoption of electric vehicles.” Bside is the second phase of the Minto Westside condo development at Bathurst and Front Streets in downtown Toronto. The 20-storey tower will feature 323 suites with prices starting in the low $200,000 range, with occupancy slated to begin in 2018.
