The incident took place at about 3:25 a.m. in the 400 block of North Frances Street, Madison police said. Lahcen Martinez, 25, Madison, was tentatively charged with battery to a public transit officer, carrying a concealed weapon, disorderly conduct and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. According to police: The 21-year-old Hopper driver was parked in the 400 block of North Frances Street when the suspect jumped into the front seat and tried to throw her out. A Hopper is an open-air electric vehicle that provides free rides downtown and in the campus area. "A buckled seat belt kept her in the driver's seat," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain. "The man then punched her in the face and put a hand over her face." The driver bit his hand and was able to get out of the seat, but the suspect still allegedly tried to attack her. "A passerby, an unidentified man, intervened and ended up getting punched by the suspect," DeSpain said. "The passerby was able to get him to walk away." Police caught up with him a short distance away. "He struggled with officers, and was found to be carrying a six-inch folding knife," DeSpain said. The passerby who helped the driver left the scene before police arrived.
