These folks have their heart in the right place, but they need to do
a little more homework.
No OEM EV's have a transmission. (Reduction gear, yes.
Multi-speed transmission, no.) No highway capable OEM EV's have wheel
motors. The reasons for both of these are well understood by all
experienced manufacturers of EVs.
It is interesting that almost every EV start up begins with
a transmission or wheel motors (in this case _both_.) The Mitubishi i
MiEV prototype began with 4 in-wheel motors, then dropped down to two
in-wheel motors, and then after a great deal of development and
testing, abandoned hub motors entirely. Porshe had a hub motor car in
the late 1800's, and learned the lesson well, never to go back. I
think that every EV OEM has touched the hub-motor "third rail" at one
point in their history. The same "third rail" lesson is true for
transmissions in EVs.
I guess every new EV manufacturer must pee on the electric
fence once to learn the lesson. Expensive and painful lesson to learn
the hard way, however.

Eh? Leaving aside the well known (though apparently not to these folks)
wheel motor problem of unsprung mass, why would they need a transmission
with wheel motors?
I noticed that too. And an off-road vehicle is probably the worse
place for heavy wheels.
Van de Loo predicts funding will come from the private sector until
the car maker is able to hold an initial public offering.
Yeah, so have hundreds of other EV startups. Good luck with that.
Agreed.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see a market for this EV.
Probably not but lots of Australia has plenty of sunshine and a
dearth of road. And gas is expensive. So it may have more appeal
than most of us in the US think. But I think that price is probably
a deal killer especially for something you're going to go trashing
in the outback.
