I’m not really interested in the public charging infrastructure topic, but I
shop at the Lucky supermarket mentioned in the press release. I also shop at
the Whole Foods market and bought my Leaf at the Nissan dealer where Bruce
found other L3 EVSE.

The installation at Lucky is done correctly in my opinion. It is located in an
area of the parking that is rarely used making it unlikely that any ICE vehicle
will ever park there. The one at Whole Foods is in a premium area of a very
crowded parking lot (very close to the Whole Foods entrance — I walk past it
every time I shop there). I find ICE vehicles parked there often.

From one perspective, Supermarkets are a logical place for an L3 installation.
It is quite common to take about 30 minutes to shop for groceries; meaning the
car is unlikely to be sitting there taking a charging spot but not charging.
However, grocery shopping is something that is usually done close to home
making the need for charging there unlikely. I doubt that anybody who shops at
that Lucky lives more than five miles away; they would use a different store
closer to home.

I have yet to see the charging stations at the Lucky being used (except for the
picture in the press release). The ones at the Whole Foods are used much more.
I suspect it is the convenience to the store entrance rather than the need to
charge as the reason they are being used.

My problem with opportunity charging is that I can’t count on finding a space
that is not being used and with a working EVSE. If I plan to go out for a 2.5
hour dinner someplace that is beyond the range of my Leaf, I need to be able to
find a place to charge near where I’m going for dinner that is not being used
by another car and with a working EVSE. If I can’t find such a place before my
reservation, then I am stuck waiting while the car charges, assuming I can find
a place on my way home. For me it is better to leave the Leaf at home for such
trips.

I did use the public charging at San Francisco airport once. It was during the
Thanksgiving holiday rush and the parking garage was quite full. I pulled into
an EVSE space, plugged my car in for about 1/2 hour while I ran inside to wait
for my arriving guest. These spots are really convenient for access to the
terminal.
