The survey also showed a growing interest in electric vehicles.

About 1 in 3 Hawaii residents said that they were thinking of buying an
electric vehicle.

Of the prospective EV owners, 53 percent had not yet purchased one because
of perceptions about price, while 35 percent were concerned about access to
charging infrastructure. Maui residents expressed the highest level of
interest. Some 36 percent of Maui residents are thinking of purchasing an

The Post offered many insightful observations in its review of this year’s
energy-sector developments [“For energy, 2015 is a turning point,” Economy &
Business, Dec. 26]. But the article failed to recognize one key trend and,
consequently, was far too pessimistic about our likely continued dependence
on oil for transport.

As Bloomberg analysts observed this year, battery prices have been falling
much more rapidly than predicted and are where the International Energy
Agency projected they would be in 2020. Tesla projects a further 30 percent
reduction from increased production and manufacturing improvements. Electric
cars also have inherent advantages in simplicity and performance such that
they could very well become the dominant new car purchase as soon as a
decade from now, even without a return to very high oil prices.
