What I do to avoid over-charging is to plug in my truck as soon as I get home (usually around 7 PM) and then unplug around 11 PM. If that has not provided enough charge to get to or above 80% then I can either unplug it a little later or I can plug it in again as soon as I get up the next morning and let it charge some more until I am ready to go to work. I actually like to charge it before use, not only because it is better for the battery but also to slightly warm up the batteries in the cold, so they work better (less sag).

How can I get it to charge to 80% > then stop? I have no knowledge. But what I do for my EV, is I only charge with L1 and so I know that I get about 4 miles range per hour of charge. So when I have only used up today's 32 miles round trip to work, I plug it in at 11 PM and it will be full when I leave at 7AM the next morning. If I want to get to 80%, then I can wait till it gets down to about 40 miles usage before plugging it in at 11 PM and then I will be near 80% by morning. Something like that. With L2 it would ALWAYS be full past 100% if I left it overnight. So I don't.
