Shelly and Stephen Maden have set a new trend in Abthorpe by being; as far as is known; the first villagers to purchase a 100% electric powered car. They explained that they needed to buy a new car and after seeing advertisements on television and carrying out research they realised that buying an all electric vehicle was just right for them. They found the new technology exciting and the little Renault Zoe seemed ideal to transport them each day to their work place at the University of Buckingham. The incentive by the Government to give a grant of £5,000 towards the cost of the new car and the installation of a charge point in their home simply increased their enthusiasm. With a chuckle they explained that their new purchase was not without its problems. Shortly after taking delivery they decided to make their first long journey that would involve stopping en-route at public charge points to top up their car’s battery. Sadly all but one of the charge points they visited were faulty and they ran out of electricity and had to call for assistance from Renault the manufacturer’s rescue service. That they said was a very steep learning curve for them. They now know that until the national electric car infrastructure is improved they shouldn’t use their car for long journeys. But it is, they say, perfect for their current needs – especially going to work. Using an overnight Economy 7 tariff their Renault costs an estimated 2p a mile to run compared to 20p or more for the petrol driven alternative. It drives like a normal car and Stephen emphasised “It’s ridiculously smooth – feels like a space ship without any noise or gear changes.” When asked if they would buy another electric car in the future they retorted they would definitely do that provided that battery life was extended and the national public charging point infrastructure improved. Even now a full charge can take only around 20 minutes – just time to have a coffee and comfort break. They pointed out that our Government has recently announced that four cities will share a £40m pot to improve electric car infrastructure. The cities are London, Bristol, Nottingham and locally Milton Keynes. Shelly and Stephen feel sure that by the time they need to replace their new electric car the situation nationally will have drastically changed for the better. It is theoretically impossible to unplug a Type 2 connector (like this Renault Zoe is using) by pulling it, and this has proven to be quite true. Part of the plug is still stuck on the car, but all the metal parts are gone.
