When Chrysler unveiled its 2017 Pacifica at the Detroit auto show, the automaker confirmed that the minivan would be available with both conventional gas and fuel-sipping hybrid drivetrains. However, it appears as though Chrysler could be planning a third drivetrain for its latest minivan. A closer looks at this Pacifica prototype's camouflage reveals an 'EV' stamp on its rear lift gate. This is the exact same tag we saw on the all-electric Fiat 500e before it was introduced to the market. And the fact that this prototype is wearing camouflage at all is an indication that Chrysler engineers could have something up their sleeves -- since its Detroit unveiling, Chrysler has removed the camouflage from the rest of its Pacifica test fleet. Like the hybrid, the Pacifica EV would likelyl store its battery packs in the area typically reserved for the minivan's Stow 'n Go seats. However, those batteries would have to be larger than the hybrid's in order to provide a longer driving range. Chrysler says the Pacifica hybrid can travel about 30 miles on battery power. If this is indeed a production intent model, it remains to be seen if the Pacifica EV will be a regular production model or simply a vehicle intended to comply with California's zero emission laws. Whatever the case, it will probably be a year or two before we learn the full story. Update: Leftlane has been unable to verify that this prototype is a pure EV rather than a hybrid mule. The story has been updated with a more speculative tone to reflect that fact.
