A cement truck collided with two other vehicles Thursday morning, including
a BMW i8 [pih] Protonic Blue. The crash occured near the 73 freeway offramp
and Newport Coast Drive. Local reports say three people were hospitalized
with life-threatening injuries.

California Highway Patrol officials said the collision happened at 8:42 a.m.
between a gardening truck and a cement truck, causing the cement truck to
tip over into southbound Newport Coast Drive lanes.

After the collision, the truck fell onto the BMW i8, according to Orange
County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz.

A 50-year-old man and 49-year-old woman were taken with moderate traumatic
injuries to Mission Hospital and the 50-year-old man who was in critical
condition was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana,
where his condition began to improve, Kurtz said.

As you can see from the images embedded here, the i8 was severely damaged in
one of the unluckiest crashes that can occur on the street.

Here's What Happens When A Cement Truck Falls On A BMW i8
[February 25th, 2016] Andrew P Collins ht2 David

California Highway Patrol says a cement truck collided with a small pickup
in Newport Beach, CA this morning causing carnage across multiple lanes. The
cement truck crushed this BMW i8 electric sports car as it toppled to a
halt.

The OC Register says three people were taken to hospitals with serious
injuries, but does not specify who was in which vehicle. Orange County Fire
Authority Captain Larry Kurtz told local news that one 50-year-old man was
initially assessed as “critical,” but began recovering after being taken to
nearby Orange County Global Medical Center.

All three vehicles involved appear to have taken substantial damage; the i8
is essentially unrecognizable from the front.

Seems miraculous that anyone would have made it out of that vehicle at all.
Here’s to a quick recovery for all involved ...

BMW i8 crushed by cement truck will break your heart
Feb 26th 2016 Erin Marquis

Look away, Bimmer lovers.

When a car like a BMW i8 is totaled, it's the end of not just a superb
machine, but also a work of art. In a scene reminiscent of a Wile E. Coyote
cartoon, a cement truck flattened one of the luxury [plug-in] hybrid coupes
on an offramp in Newport Beach, CA on Thursday.

According to California Highway Patrol, the trouble started when a large
gardening truck hit a cement truck on highway 73, OCRegister reported. The
impact caused the cement truck to tip over into southbound Newport Coast
Drive lanes. It just so happens that a $135,000 i8 was underneath it.

Three people were severely injured in the crash, one critically. All were
taken to area hospitals and are recovering from their injuries. The fact
that the driver and passengers survived such a catastrophic crash is a
testament to the i8's safety. The carbon-fiber body and aluminum chassis
held up remarkably well under such an intense crash ...

3 hospitalized after cement truck collision with 3 vehicles on Newport Coast
Drive

Three people were hospitalized Thursday morning after a cement truck and
gardening truck collided on the 73 freeway offramp and onto Newport Coast
Drive. The cement truck fell onto a blue car after the collision, officials
said.

NEWPORT BEACH – A cement truck driver lost control Thursday morning after
avoiding stopped cars at the end of the 73 freeway off-ramp, causing him to
tip over onto Newport Coast Drive and collide with three drivers, officials
said.

James Andrew Case, 49, of Orange, slammed on his brakes around 8:40 a.m. and
turned right to avoid cars waiting at a red light at the end of the Newport
Coast Drive off-ramp,

As he swerved, he hit a curb, which sent him onto a dirt right shoulder
before he struck a wooden sign post and a traffic signal, according to
California Highway Patrol.

Case continued to drive the wobbly truck onto eastbound Newport Coast Drive,
where it tipped onto its left side before hitting a Newport Beach woman in a
blue BMW i8 and a Santa Ana man in a gardening truck.

An Anaheim man who was driving toward the collision on Newport Coast Drive
attempted to avoid the accident, but failed, hitting the cement truck. He
was not injured, but the other three drivers involved in the accident were
hospitalized and expected to survive.

Irvine and Newport Beach police officers blocked southbound traffic and one
northbound lane on Newport Coast Drive for more than 7 hours.

Weird Accident Involves a BMW i8, a Cement Truck and a Gardening Truck
26TH FEBRUARY 2016 VLAD MITRACHE

Being in the wrong place at the wrong time is not something we can control,
but what we can do (to some extent, usually dictated by our financial
potency) is to make sure that when the worst is about to happen, at least,
we’ll be sitting in one of the safest cars on the road.

The BMW i8 hasn’t been tested by none of the major organizations devoted to
this type of classifications - the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or their European
equivalent, the EuroNCAP. Now, though, we have found out the hard way that
it can withstand a large cement truck toppling over on top of it.

On Thursday morning, a cement truck hit a garden truck under undisclosed
circumstances near the 73 freeway offramp and Newport Coast Drive.
Surprisingly, the much bigger vehicle was the one that tipped over following
the impact, dragging a third car - the blue BMW i8 plug-in hybrid - into the
accident.

Three people have been taken to hospital as a result of this incident, with
one initially in critical condition while the other two suffered
life-threatening injuries. Orange County Fire Authority Captain Larry Kurtz
said that a 50-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman were taken to Mission
Hospital with moderate traumatic injuries, while the 50-year-old man with
more severe injuries has been brought to Orange County Global Medical Center
in Santa Ana.

The report from The Orange County Register doesn’t state the vehicles these
three injured people were in, nor does it make it clear who was at fault or
what exactly happened. Since the collision took place at around 8:42 in the
morning, the traffic was pretty heavy so about 50 cars were forced to extend
their morning commute before the authorities closed down the road to allow
the paramedics to focus on the victims. Six hours later, traffic was still
blocked despite the efforts of both New Port and Irvine authorities, since
streets in both cities were affected.

BMW i8 Rolled Over By Cement Mixer Truck In California
February 25, 2016 John Halas ht2 Troy W

In what can only be described as a freak accident, a BMW i8 was rolled over
by a cement mixer truck in Newport Beach, California this morning, yet
amazingly, no one was killed.

Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz told the LA Times that a
40-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman were transported to the hospital
with “moderate injuries”, while a 50 year-old man was initially taken to the
hospital in “critical condition, but he has since improved”.

According to authorities, the accident happened Thursday morning at around
8:40 a.m. when a gardening truck collided with a cement truck, which then
tipped over onto an offramp, crushing the BMW i8 hybrid sports car.

Given the circumstances and keeping in mind that these pictures were taken
after the firefighters extracted the passengers out of the car - most likely
cutting into it, the carbon-fiber bodied i8 seems to have held pretty well.
